Bombay Gaylord Fine Indian Cuisine Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

I was very skeptical at first. I'm no fan of Indian cuisine because it never satisfied me the previous times I've tried Indian food. Went here last night and I was blown away! We ordered about 5 dishes and they all tasted great! Flavorful! Service was great too, so I left with a happy belly. Will definitely be back. Best garlic naan I've hadddd. :)

Their Bhindi Masala was too spicy for me. I'm fairly accustomed to Indian food, and have been to lots of Indian restaurants. This one is twice as spicy as other restaurants. I was in half tears as I ate it. It's possible that my taste bud was shot because of terrible cold I had then. I liked their service, so I would give one more shot. I wish they have paneer makhani, though. That is one dish for me to gauge the level of Indian restaurant.

We have been going to Bombay Gaylord for a couple of years now and the food is very good. Sometimes we eat at the restaurant and sometimes we order takeout, which can admittedly be variable in quality. However, when it's good, it's very good. The staff is friendly, and the restaurant has a typical Indian restaurant feel to it. It is conveniently located in the center of Silver Spring, so it's a great place to grab dinner on your way out for drinks or before seeing a movie.

As I said in a previous post- my kids and I have been coming here for years. We stopped by last Saturday for their lunch buffet. Wow! they have completely renovated the interior of the restaurant- looks very nice- much nicer than before. The buffet was fresh and seasoned well. Many options to satisfy our craving for Indian Food. So glad they are still in the area- If you have not been here in a while- come on back!

Bombay Gaylord sits right above the popular Quarry House Tavern. It recently underwent a renovation and we dropped by to check it out. The restaurant mostly opened up the dining space and slightly updated the decor and furniture. It was difficult to notice any significant changes. The menu did not seem to have been changed. Prices were fair but the food lacked life and taste. It was passable but not that tasty. The samosa was served in a strange lasagna-like fashion. The masala was too bland. Overall, the renovations spruced up the place but did not affect what really needed to be updated - the menu.

Indian buffets rarely let me down. The servers were a little stalker-esque; they just kind of watched you the whole time; no personality. But, hey, with a buffet, you don't really need the servers. Chicken masala, savory and creamy. A vegetable dish that looked bland, but that was well-seasoned, and a potato dish that complimented the chicken nicely. The naan was good, and the rice was good. I ordered a mango-yogurt drink called a lassi, and that was good. Even the dessert porridge was good. We got some vegetable samosas on the side, and they were really well-done too. Overall, kind of bland, but not disappointing. Really quiet and small and nice for a simple meal.

Lunch Buffet was amazing! $10.99 for all you can eat of all of your favorite Indian dishes! Curry chicken, rice, naan bread, Tandoori Wings... Best Indian food and BEST lunch deal in Silver Spring!

I am no food critic so I'm not going to pretend like I know how to professionally critique food (no offense, but most Yelp-ers seem to think they are also a professional critic) I have gone here a couple of times. Being new to the area, my boyfriend took me here. The food was pretty good! I like Indian food because I feel like they have a lot of vegetarian options, and I like spicy food! The atmosphere was pretty nice but I have gone to better places in the area. All in all, I'd say give them a try! Good for prior to seeing a movie or prior to hitting some of the bars in the downtown silver spring area!

Went here on a Monday night and the place was empty; we were the only two customers the entire time! This was very off-putting. The samosas were good and they have Kingfisher, but the food was meh. Bland and boring--they didn't even ask how spicy we wanted our food. The waiter didn't come by very often and I generally felt unwanted as a guest. I guess I'll try this place again. I lived in India so I crave Indian food a lot, but there are better restaurants that hit the spot that are more authentic to boot.

Went here for lunch last weekend. It was an okay place. Started off with samosa chaat which was good. Wife ordered saag paneer which she liked. I ordered the butter chicken which I didn't like so much. Like other reviews have said, it was very sweet tasting. I also didn't like the quality of the chicken itself. Service was very friendly. Will give them another chance and will be back soon.

I really like this place - especially their tender, juicy, flavorful Tandoori Chicken. I get it pretty often and usually ask for extra onions. That drizzled with some lemon juice and some naan is one of my favorite simple, quick but oh so good dinners when I'm home and not in the mood to cook. I love their lunch buffet special. G is a huge fan of their samosas and their Alu Mater. Quite often they are on the list of places to go eat. Koral and often G

My wife loves Indian food. I kind of like it sometimes so I'm probably not the best person to review this place. Nevertheless, I was very impressed with the fresh and flavorful food. It was more expensive than I had anticipated but it's probably worth it for someone who enjoys Indian food. I'll keep trying it though until I find a dish or dishes that I love since my parents taught me to have an open mind and an open palate :)

Wanted to go to a local Indian restaurant & suddenly remembered this place from a while back. They catered to friend's wedding reception and all I could remember was how amazing the food was! Well, they did not disappoint. Didn't remember the names of the dishes we had, but the chick peas were spot on. Will return.

I chose this restaurant based on reviews of the chicken tikka masala. It is my favorite Indian dish and I had high hopes. Unfortunately it was only average at best. Of all the other places I have tried it, this was probably the blandest of the bunch. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't bad but it wasn't memorable either. The naan was light and fluffy and full of garlic just like I wanted it. The server was attentive and kept my drink full but didn't really go out of his way with suggestions or chit chat. Overall I think this place falls squarely in the average category.

Had lunch here today and realized thus was the third time I've been in at lunch when we were one of two tables with customers. Honestly, it is a small buffet with a limited menu. Great flavors. Ok naan. Awesome rice pudding aka keer.

The beef sheek kabob was great. Surprisingly great. Tender minced beef, great spices (including hot pepper), good basmati rice. I want more. Everything else was meh to disappointing. Disappointing: The papadam was slightly stale which wouldn't be an issue were it free. It's not. Worse, the green mint & cilantro chutney was a tad tart and looked watery. Looking online, it turns out that some recipes include yogurt which would account for both. If you've only had the chutney with yogurt, you're missing out. Meh: The bhindi masala was ok. They used whole okra. The okra was slimy (great okra is tender/soft) and the sauce really tomato-y. They have damn good sheek kabob though. I'll do take out occasionally for the that and pass on everything else.

This restaurant is a big letdown and I'm glad I don't live near it. Vegetable pakoras appetizer was bland and very oily, the vegetable main dishes we ordered were lacking in flavor and spice. Actually, the waiter didn't bother to ask how spicy we wanted our dishes to be. Small portions on the main dishes...and for $11-$12? Rice was on the oily side, too. Not coming back.

I have never been to the restaurant but I often order through takeout taxi and their food is delicious. They have the best chicken tikka masla I have tasted. I have been to a lot of Indian Restaurants and none of them taste as good.

  • Evan L.

Generally terrible. No spices to speak of. Waiter didn't ask how spiced we'd like our meals. The Dal Makhani was bland. The Aloo Gobi was one texture: mush. Its cauliflower tasted off somehow... a little slimy. Redeemed somewhat by a decent vegetable samosa. I can't remember the last time I was so disappointed by an Indian restaurant.

Great sized portions. We shared 2 dishes between two people and had plenty of food leftover. The tikka masala and the vindaloo is VERY good. Fresh vegetables were used for the sauces but they could have been a bit more thicker and hearty. Garlic naan was above most that I've had the chance to try. Excellent service and nice quiet atmosphere inside the restaurant. Wait staff ensured we had everything we needed and filled our beverages frequently.

My friend and I walked in one night craving curry. We were debating between here and the Thai across the street. We ended up here just because we had never tried this spot, and wanted something new. We ordered veggie samosas which were only $2, pretty good deal. My friend ordered the lamb korma which he loved. I ordered the baingan bharta with roti. I thought everything was delicious. Prices are standard for the Indian restaurants in the area. There is no parking, so you will have to find street parking or park on the street. Service was good.

  • Denise K.

I got the chicken tikka which was delicious and came out on a sizzling platter. My friend got the chicken tikka masala which was really good. I agree with other reviewers it was on the sweet side but still really good. They didn't ask us what spice level we wanted so if you want to choose I think you have to ask specifically. The rice, garlic naan and vegetable samosas were all delicious. Service was fast.

You know when you go to an "ethnic" restaurant and it tastes like what they think you (an American) will like? Yuuuuuuuuuup, that's this place. I generally think it's pretty hard to screw up Indian food. You've got the staple tikka masala and lamb makhani that everybody serves and it's generally good stuff. That's all I was looking for from this place, being that it's the closest Indian place to our house. But they even figured out how to screw up tikka masala. Now the Trader Joe's tikka masala is the best Indian dish close to my house. The weird part was how sweet the sauce was. It was like the made the dish, then stirred it with rock candy. It was just ... weird. My only guess is that they thought this is what fat, sweet-toothed Americans like. Also, there was no free papadum, which is just funky. We ordered it for a couple bucks, which was a mistake because once again the sauces were sweet and terrible. Miraculously, my wife's lamb makhani was good. I would say that it gives me hope to come back and try more dishes, but I don't think so. It did earn them the second star, however. Basically, I've always wondered about this place while walking to Quarry House (right around the corner, down the stairs). When we walked it, it was nearly empty. And for good reason.

Ordered takeout... tried the Baigan Ka Bharta dish and was really impressed. Portion sizes were reasonable as well. For a Sunday evening, the place was pretty bare which isn't a great sign, but I was happy with my order. The buffet looked excellent and the staff were really friendly. I haven't eaten at many Indian restaurants in the area so i don't have a lot to compare Bombay with.

We have newly discovered this restaurant although we have live in Silver Spring for a while. We are never disappointed. We actually have never sat down, but their take out, direct and take out taxi have been outstanding. Highly recommend the tandori anything-lamb chops especially, but we have not had a bad dish.

Nothing special here. I just had the lunch buffet. The buffet itself is reasonably priced, but the food was quite bland, even when I take into account that I was eating buffet food. I've been to Indian buffets before, and this had to be my least enjoyable experience.

A friend and I finally decided to drop in for lunch and all I can say is... nope. Nope, nope, nope. I've been to India. I don't know what this food was. Way too sweet. I guess if you like Americanized Indian food, this is the place for you. Otherwise, avoid. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Great lunch, fresh vegetables, tandoori chicken was very nice and spicy and the restaurant was clean and organized. Waiter was friendly and helpful and the selection of items for the lunch buffet was great.

We have glanced at the front of this restaurant at least weekly for the last three years (we live in the neighborhood), but had never gone in until we found a recent Groupon. We went last Tuesday, and we will be going back. For appetizers, we ordered papadum (delicious, although I recognize it's hard to mess that one up ), samosa chaat (very flavorful and well-balanced) and dal soup (on the bland side, but comforting on a cold night). The chutneys that accompanied the appetizers were exceptional in my opinion. We were a bit bummed the papadum was not complimentary, but on the whole, appetizers were very reasonably priced. For entrees, we ordered chicken tikka masala, which my husband thoroughly enjoyed, the sauce had a very nice, rich flavor; and malai kofta, which may have been the best version of that dish I've ever eaten. Many times, the dumplings are dense and clearly made with canned vegetables. These were very fresh and the sauce was really delicious. Portions were generous, which makes me forgive my initial impression that the entree prices were a bit on the high side. I've read reviews that say this place is hit and miss, but based on our single visit thus far, and relative to other Indian food restaurants we have sampled on the area, the food deserves five stars. As for service, I will concur that the wait staff was a bit odd, although certainly polite and attentive, and one guy (not our waitor, thankfully) reeked heavily of cigarettes which was a bit of a put-off, but we were so happy with our food that it wasn't overly distracting.

The food is absolutely delicious, tasty and affordable. It reminds me of eating at Indian restaurants in Greenwich Village (NYC). I do eat here quite often. This spot is fantastic!

With a name like that, you expect it to be at National Harbor, but it's not. On to the review... We ordered take out on Saturday, and based on these reviews, we got: Rasaam (Spicy and yummy) Saag Paneer (off the hook good!) Mussels Masala (surprisingly good) Garlic Naan (standard) Bhindi Masala (very good) And it came with a good deal of basmati rice. The Rasaam was a nice blend of spicy and tomotoe-y. Saag Paneer was super creamy and awesome with a touch of spicy with fairly large pieces of Paneer. The mussels were probably frozen, but the sauce was very tasty. Garlic Naan was garlic naan. Nothing much you can do to make that super special. The Bhindi (okra) masala was amazing. The okra was all very tender except for one piece. I wouldn't mind sitting down and eating there. Especially since parking was tough to find when I went.

The chicken Tikka Masala here is adequate, though nothing to write home about. Many of the other popular dishes are similarly acceptable. Sadly, Silver Spring doesn't currently offer much in the way of competition for Indian restaurants. What prompted me to write this review, however, was the Vindaloo, which is so awful that it should be embarrassing - no real spice to it at all, and Vindaloo is supposed to be a very spicy dish. Sadly, this tendency to de-spice traditionally hot dishes has become pandemic in the US, and I've experienced it from coast to coast. The fact that customers unused to Indian dishes may complain is no excuse - part of a restaurant's job is to educate, and Bombay Gaylord fails to do this, embarrassingly so because theirs must be the least spicy Vindaloo I've ever tasted - and I've tasted many in the US. When I first tried my Vindaloo, I was shocked, first at the total lack of spiciness, then at the taste, which was unlike any Vindaloo I've ever tasted, and also at the saltiness, which was very pronounced. I decided to simply leave it and share part of my daughter's meal instead (she's 9 and doesn't eat much). But at the end of the meal, I couldn't stay silent and mentioned it to the waiter. He apologized, said he was aware of the problem, told me the old canard about Americans not liking it spicy, and said he would add extra spices for me to take it home. I accepted that, but even when I tried it later at home, it was about as spicy as a Biryani - if that! If Indian restaurants can't maintain one or two dishes with their traditional spices and flavors, I think it's time for their owners and chefs to go into the fast food business. An Indian restaurant is the best ambassador for Indian culture there is, and when you undermine that, it is, in effect, a betrayal - a betrayal of food and of culture - a betrayal of India herself. Bring back the true Vindaloo! It's just one dish - those who can't handle it shouldn't order it! And those restauranteurs who can't (or won't) make it properly should keep it off the menu, rather than offering a watered-down version of it.

The chicken tikka masala here is addictive. I think I could eat just the sauce and rice for a meal, there's that much flavor. I've always enjoyed everything at the buffet, but when they put the tikka masala out there, it's a wrap. I'm staying at least an hour, 3 full plates minimum. Sorry m'am, I know you have a family dinner to get back to on the other side of the restaurant, but I'll be in this line for a while. The best surprise are the carrots they serve as "couvert", something to hold you over until food comes. They must be soaking them in honey and vinegar or some other wondrous concoction that makes carrots taste eighty times better than usual. And you top it off with some green curry (I think? excuse my ignorance, I just like food). The only way to describe it is like this: Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. That's the sound I make when I eat them, as I believe words to be unfit for a joy such as this. If you go often enough, the managers and waitstaff will recognize you. Don't be scared off by the gruff demeanor, it's just a test to see if you're worthy of eating their delicacies. Just kidding, but the food is worth it, so consider it part of the experience and chalk it up to cultural differences. Best parts: tandoor wings, chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, mango lassi, samosas

I'm glad I found a place I can get my Indian food fix near home. I went for the Sunday evening buffet, which I was initially disappointed with because there wasn't masala or butter chicken, but after trying everything else on the buffet, I realized there was nothing to be sad about. Everything was delicious. Goat curry, vegetable curry, tandoori chicken, and more. It all tasted good. My boyfriend went back to the buffet 3 times, even after being full. I'll definitely be back. Also, the service was great. Our waiter kept our glasses full and was very friendly. Best part about the experience other than the food? Watching the TV for all the insane Bollywood videos. It was the most entertaining part of my day.

Good Food, But Lousy Service. We went to this restaurant and almost walked out because of the service. We had two waiters and one waiter must of been having a really bad day because her demeanor made us uncomfortable. She slammed our plates on the table (it was really sort of jolting) and she just seemed like she didn't want to serve us. We asked for bottled water and she said they didn't have any (what restaurant doesn't offer bottled water???!). My sister was beginning to take it personally, but I just think the girl is probably just rude in general. The redeeming factors are that the food was actually good and the other waiter gave us extra rice in our To Go box (even though initially he was also a bit rude). I probably won't be going there again and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone as there are plenty of other Indian Cuisine options in the area.

I'm not sure what the competition in silver spring is for Indian restaurants, but if the buffet is any indication of what to expect than, I can't believe this place would be a top contender. I guess we'll start off with the big con of this place, the food. The food seemed fresh and clean, however the taste was incredibly disappointing. Nothing was horrible and nothing was uneatable, its just was that all of the food was mehhh. I had just eaten a few days ago at a great Indian restaurant in Rockville where every bite I had I was saying, "wow", "yumm", "try this". The Buffet maybe a bad indicator of the overall quality of the cooking though. I highly recommend people stay away at least from the buffet. The selection of food for the buffet was pretty cheaply inspired : "goat curry" - not too bad, but then we get cheap "vegetable curry", "sambar", "rice", "Naam", "saag". The saag wasn't chicken saag or even paneer saag, just Saag. I looooove saag. This saag was OK, but definitively tasted different from any saag I've ever had. Not generally bad, great texture but the taste was just, not uninspired. At 12.50 a pop you should get much more for your money. A real quick list of the Pro's -decor seemed is well kept and committed. - We had a large party and we stay for a very long time and they were very hospitable to us. most likely because the place wasn't too busy, I would have kicked us out :).

So not notable. I was sorely disappointed. Pros: menu is really large with sections for tikka, biryani, bread, apps and the usual veg, seafood, chicken, etc dishes. Prices are cheap for the DC Metro area, like $14/entree for dinner. Service was prompt. Cons: Everything I tried (salmon tikka, garlic naan, pappadam) was quite greasy, and aside from the garlic in the naan, hardly flavorable. My experiences at slews of other Indian places have all been marked by food packed with spices and flavor. Also, the place was quite dirty if you ventured to the restrooms. The walls leading back to that area, the doors and everything needed to be wiped down with bleach they were so dirty. The carpets throughout looked in need of a good shampooing. Overall, this place was supremely uninspiring.

Went to the Sunday Buffet. The selection was on the smaller side, however the Chicken Tikka Marsala was heavenly. All of the food was delicious period. For my fiance and I together, our bill was $23. I left full, satisfied, and with extra money in my pocket!!!!

For the most part, Bombay Gaylord's food is plenty fine. It's nowhere near the best Indian joints in the area or even in Montgomery County, but is perfectly serviceable. At issue is the service. Slow service is understandable at boutique restaurants, but for a perfectly average place, it's a little shocking.

Why doesn't everyone love this place? Food is high quality and cheap! What more is there to life? We typically get take out, and they are always prompt and pleasant! I mean, it's not Rasika, but that's hardly a crime.

Tried their Sunday dinner buffet. Price is good for what they offer. As other reviewers mentioned, the service was not impressive, yet not horrible. I particularly enjoyed the saag and tikka masala chicken. Naan was fresh. If you want to try bit of different things, this buffet is definitely recommended.

I was here with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. I read some of the reviews before going, and was concerned about the service before hand. I mean, if the service is bad for a small group, how will they handle my group of 8? The answer? Wonderfully! We got there at 7:30, and were seated right away (which, we should have been, since we made a reservation). They found out it was my birthday and brought me an extra dish of lentils on the house, which I thought was a nice gesture. The waiter could have been a little more attentive, but he seemed to be trying to strike a balance to not be too in our faces while we talked and looked over the menu. The food was very good - I enjoyed the chicken curry and the lentils, and I stole a little bit of the dishes from the friends sitting around me, and they were great as well. I would definitely go again if I'm in the neighborhood!

Missed 5 starts because the interior is the tackiest indian wedding set-up a white kid from NH could imagine... I mean... has no-one told them they'd be starts of the neighborhood if they just classed it up a little? The food was fantastic... unexpected gems like "Rogan Josh" a curried goat that will make you swear of indian chicken and beefs for eternity... They have great indian (english) beer selections, varied sides and appetizers.. and all at a pretty reasonable price point... and great for "sharing" so go with a big group if your looking for something to do If you've been avoiding going here because it looks super tacky... the bad news is that it's the tackiest... but suck it up... the food will make the uncomfortably uninterpreted culture bareable.

I usually don't review a place until I've eaten there a few times, and I've only done this place once, but I figure I ought to write this review as a warning. This place was obviously designed for people who can't take really spicy Indian food. I might have expected this from the posted reviews on the walls, but my wife steered me here once when I was in Silver Spring, and I figured I'd try it. She always has tandoori chicken (which isn't supposed to be spicy anyway) even at an all-you-can-eat buffet (she just gets several portions), so she was not particularly disappointed. I sampled a few dishes and found nothing really spicy enough. I like Indian buffets, because they give me a chance to taste some of the Indian vegetarian dishes (which can be quite tasty) without eating vegetarian meals (which I never find satisfying), but the lunch buffet here can only be recommended if you're stuck in downtown Silver Spring and can't get somewhere else to have Indian food (see my review for Memsahib to find a place that I really like!) So two stars is a generous evaluation for this place.

I really like the food, especially the dal makhni, and I think the prices are great. I've only been here for dinner and can't comment on the lunch buffet. The only negative is that sometimes the service is a little too prompt - almost like they want you to leave. The last time I went it was fine, but almost every other visit felt rushed, even when there was an empty dining room.

Spicy Tandoori wings! I'll take two. They are still delicious to me. They are always open when I want them to be and they have some great chicken tikka masala. Check the paper for their coupons. I have been able to get my food discounted here a lot. It is great indian food.

Went here for lunch buffet with a coworker. Its awful .. there was no tikka masala, everything was super fatty and dumbed down, the servers were odd. There were a lot of people eating alone in this place and it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I know there are better indian places in silver spring .. check out GHAR-E-KABAB for a proper lunch buffet.

Dec 31 2013 around 6 pm, I agree with the reviewer that called the wait staff a bit "stalker-esque." They really are very odd and un-helpful. The food was good but I will NEVER go back: over near the entrance to the kitchen one of the waiters actually made eye contact with me as he began to put his hand in his mouth, and eventually just inserted his thumb to pick something from a back tooth and flick that "something" on the floor nearby. It was nauseating and he seemed completely oblivious to the fact that he was fully in view of several customers and specifically making eye contact with me. When we asked for our leftovers to be boxed up and waiter seemed to not understand that my friend and I had two separate orders and he brought one Styrofoam box to the table for both of us. We asked for a second box and he returned and scraped the leftovers into two boxes paying no attention to the food on her plate versus the food on my plate. Very little speaking ever took place from placing the order to getting the check. Waiters used phrases and very short sentences, I swear he nodded toward my friend's glass of beer and said "want more?" when the glass was full. Really odd. Sorry.

Incredible rice, lightly salted and flavored with cardamom. The naan is also delicious. Everything else is quite good, but not incredible, but I go back for the rice. The buffet has great variety and is a great value.

I ALWAYS suggest going here only because of the name of the restaurant. I know...I'm like 5 1/2 years old. The last time I went was about three years ago. I think it was around Eid, so they were rushing to close up shop which confuses me since the workers were obviously Hindi not Muslim.. Their food is literally like crusty leftovers. Rice was crunchy and old. The tandoori was lukewarm. The only thing keeping me from giving a one-star rating was their garlicky naan. Delicious.

We love Bombay Gaylord (or "The Gaylord," as we fondly call it). The delicious food and personable service make it our favorite non-vegetarian Indian restaurant in the area. It isn't in the middle of the Silver Spring restaurant scene, but a couple of blocks over on the corner of Bonifant and Georgia Avenue. It's a fairly large restaurant with simple decor - and plaques on the wall showing how many times it has been selected by Washingtonian and Zagat's as a great bargain restaurant. The restaurant offers a buffet, but we usually visit for regular meal service or takeout. We love the chicken tikka masala (and order it nearly every time), and all of the selections on the vegetarian menu have been excellent. The Mutter Paneer is especially good. They offer a variety of delicious breads, and every dish is served with their seasoned basmati rice. This is hands-down the best rice I've ever had in a restaurant. Perfectly cooked, lightly oiled, and seasoned with saffron, cloved, cardamom, and cinnamon. I love this rice! We occasionally get an extra container of rice for take-out because it is so darn good and keeps fairly well for a day or two in the fridge. They make a very nice mango lassi and their desserts are sweet - but I rarely have room to eat any! We visit often enough that the waiters definitely recognize us and are very welcoming. They are usually prompt with taking orders, refilling water, and bringing the check. Food comes very rapidly, also making Bombay Gaylord an excellent takeout option - call in your order, and it'll be ready for pick-up in 15 minutes! We often drop by to grab takeout as we're about to pass Silver Spring on the way home.

Great take out place, not so great dine-in. Chicken Massala and rice always excellent. We order food from them at least once a month.

This is the best Indian food PERIOD. I was not a fan until I ate here. Their Shrimp Marsala is sooooo yummy. I love this spot and it is not expensive.

This place is fantastic. I come here every few weeks for the lunch buffet and it is a really good deal. For 9.99, you get your choice of two chicken dishes and several veggie dishes on top of some pretty good naan. All the dishes are seasoned really well and cooked to perfection. I am certainly a fan.

I love this hole in the wall. If you like nice restaurants with nice decor and nice sturdy tables move along. The staff are so nice and helpful and the food is always tasty and cheap. I can always get a table here on a Friday night which is not easy to do in Silver Spring at 8 pm.

I came here for the buffet ($9.99, which I thought was relatively decent for an Indian food buffet, although it is more expensive on the weekends). The service was good, and they had 5 dishes + naan on the buffet. I am ready to grant that I may have been spoiled in regards to Indian food, having worked in a high end Indian restaurant for some time. However, I would not pay $9.99 to go back here. The chicken makhani tasted like it had barbecue sauce in it, and that was essentially the only flavor. There was a spinach dish (it looked like saag to me but did not merit that name) that was absolutely flavorless; it tasted like boiled spinach. Their channa masala (one of my favorite Indian dishes) was overcooked to the point where the chick peas were soggy, and it again had no flavor. The naan bread was alright -- buttery and pretty fluffy, but not the right chewy texture that I've come to know and love (I eat Indian food a lot. I could probably say it's my favorite food, besides perhaps a good steak).

This place is wall-to-wall terrible- from its funeral home ambience to its watery curries and spongy naan. I had a few bites and stood up to pay. Got a puzzling reaction from the waiter when I commented that many of the curries were bland and watery: he smiled and said, 'Yes!'. I repeated myself, and he again seemed pleased to hear this. I actually had to clarify, "That's not a good thing."

If there is no star rating, I would give that. Please do not waste your money by visiting this place. I went here with my wife and kid thinking its a nice Indian hang out, but hey, turns out that this is run by Bangladesi's under Indian name !. They didnt know what yogurt means. We had a feeling like throwing up after we had lunch here. Wipe towels were stinking.. I could go on..Please think twice before landing here

I keep trying new dishes every time I get take out, and I feel it's time to update my initial review from 3 stars to 4. The butter chicken is okay, but the rest of the dishes I've tried have been great. The interior of the place is very clean and the size is surprisingly large. I like how they are curtains between certain tables to bring a bit of privacy. That's one thing you'll notice about a lot of restaurants (especially ethnic restaurants) in D.C. and the surrounding areas: the tables are always squished together and you don't feel very private. I intend on dining in-in the near future.

Second time eating Indian food and first time at this particular Indian restaurant. We will be going back for more. I used my LivingSocial coupon to try it and and it was worth it and even tipped the waiter about 30%. Friendly staff with an amazing menu. Tried to Tandoori Platter and the Saag Paneer and it was delicious. Although the interior is a little outdated - are you there to feast your eyes on the food or the decoration? Must go!

The last four reviews have me stumped. We ate dinner on Saturday, 4/28/2012. We were seated quickly as they had just opened at 5:00. The bus person was quick to bring us water, and the server was attentive but aloof. Having been in the business, I know to engage a server who seems a little reticent. One of our party was British and a fan of Indian food who has eaten Indian food in several countries, so I had an expert to challenge any wrong information. I asked about some of the dishes and got nicely detailed descriptions. One dish, I knew what was in it but couldn't recall the name. The server gave me a broad smile as he pointed it out on the menu. It gives the server a feeling of pride. I also ask the server's name and address them cordially. The food arrived quickly and was some of the better Indian food I have had in the DC area. The bus person was very attentive and kept our water glasses full without being overbearing. When plates became empty we were politely asked if we were finished and they were whisked away. The runner who delivered the food (they use a cart making it easier to bring everything at once) saw our rice was low and asked if we wanted more. We ordered an appetizer sampler, three entrees, and the garlic Naan. We were so pleased with one of the entrees, we ordered a second, and when we saw a dish being served to another table that looked like the Indian version of Fajitas (Tandoori Shrimp Masala) we asked for one of those as well. When the manager saw we were trying several dishes he came over to the table, introduced himself, and thanked us for coming. He told us about the buffets and some dishes they were considering adding to the menu. All in all it was a very pleasant experience. Our group agreed we would be going back again soon.

This place looks slightly shady on the outside and isn't in the best part of town, but was quite nice inside. Once I was inside I was greeted by the wonderful smell of Nan and Curry, both of which were sitting on the buffet. Didn't get the buffet because I am rarely in the mood for food that's been sitting on a burner for an inordinate about of time, but many customers did and seemed to return at least once. Forgot what we ordered, but it was quite good. The sole wait staff was surprisingly alert considering the fact that he was tending to about 7 tables by himself. When you order a la carte, they wheel it out on a little tray and present it quite well. The rice that joined the dishes we ordered was quite fragrant but don't forget to pick out the cloves before you chow down or else you'll get a chunk of it along with it's gross after taste! They kept the thermostat set to 80 when I was there. Saw the display as I was walking to the restroom. Pair that with a hot dish and it gets quite warm. Luckily, they kept my water glass full. =) Will go again.

I went there recently for the lunch buffet, and for $8.99 it's a great deal. There was nothing too fancy, but they hit all the basics: curry, rice, tandoori, masala, naan, salad--everything was delicious. The chicken curry was a little salty, but that happens with buffet food. By about 12:30 the place was pretty busy, so it's good to get there a little early. It's not Heritage India, but it's a great lunch destination if you work in Downtown Silver Spring.

I have driven by the Bombay Gaylord hundreds of times and was always so curious, but also pretty scared. It looks like it hasn't been renovated since the 70s or cleaned since before then (...not a quality you look for in a restaurant). I was in desperate need of an Indian food fix though, so we decide to take an adventure to Bombay. We started with a mango lassi to pop my boyf's lassi cherry. He could never stop raving about it. It was not the best one I have had, but definitely good. I really liked the chicken tikka masala...or was it butter chicken? I am pretty sure they are the same, but the butter chicken came with a couple sliced almonds on top. I don't really mind that we got duped because, like I said, I really liked the chicken tikka masala/butter chicken. We also tried the chicken curry. It was ok, but the chicken was a little dry and the curry was not as spicy as I would have liked. The vegetable samosas were standard, but the garlic naan was some of the best I have ever tried. It even made the chicken curry taste good somehow. The decor is icky. The server was less (much less) than friendly...I don't think he said one word to us the entire time. They seemed to be doing quite the take-out business as indicated by tables covered with to-go orders in "Thank You" bags. The take-out costumers probably have the right idea: enjoy the food without having to endure the atmosphere.

The food here is delicious and portion sizes are pretty big. I usually take leftovers home and eat them for lunch the next day. The service is excellent -friendly, efficient, and food gets delivered quickly. Occasionally I'm unsure if they understand me because of language difficulties, but our order has never been wrong. When we asked about dishes with dairy in them for someone who has lactose intolerance, they sent the chef out to double check with us to make sure the food would be prepared correctly. It never seems busy, we've never had to wait for a table and rarely is it even close to being full. It's in a great location literally right next to Quarry House on Georgia Avenue.

The food is good but, not spicy... I guess my native Indian tongue is used to extra spicy. It's a cute restuarant to dine inside of. The wait staff are sweethearts and it's an inviting environment. At night it will be the best time to go there and dine and go for a walk downtown to burn all that RICE and NAAN!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought this place was great. My parents and I were visiting from New York and we were really craving some Indian food. The place is cute. I like the decorations. The service was quick and the masala was really good. When we're back in town I'd go again!

This is our 5th time there after 7 years. We first went there a couple of times in 2004 and 05 and somehow never went back. This time, we went on a Sunday evening for dinner, and the buffet caught our eye. As we entered, the place was moderately filled. The waiters were attentive and respectful. They were the same people. Although there wasn't a variety of food to choose from, it was very nice and tasty. They had basmati rice, naan, mutton curry, chicken curry, salad, gulab jamon, and mixed vegetables. The whole dinner buffet came up to about $33, plus taxes and tips. The food was made with care, we could tell from the dedication put in. We would definitely go there again, only because the people were respectful each time. You never get respect at Indian restaurants, they either ignore you or treat you with arrogance, this place was neither! Even though there wasn't a "smorgasbord" of food, the ambiance was great! It felt like eating in Maharajah's palace, thanks to the renovated walls, pictures and dining set! Note: The dinner buffet is only available on Sunday evenings/nights.

Two vastly differing experiences are pulling me in different directions here. I dragged a pal here because of the name. "Bombay Gaylord" is funny to me... I'm immature. I ordered the Saag Paneer and have never had the dish so creamy. I'm not sure how authentic that is, but it tasted really good to me. It reminded me of a creamy pesto -- seriously similar. I came here again and got the SP again, and it was the same, just really really tasty. My dad ordered the okra and I liked that a lot, too. I liked that they were whole (I've only had them served to me in pieces before) and incredibly tender. Then today I came for the lunch buffet and it was just okay. The rice is always great but I was a little disappointed at how small the buffet was -- only two vegetable dishes! Bummer for me. Today they seemed sort of half-assed with so-so chana masala and a broccoli/potato dish (forgive me for forgetting the name). That wasn't too exciting, but relatively tasty. I always have the same server and he's pretty standoffish. But he gets the job done so I guess I can't complain too much.

Loved loved loved this place. From the outside it doesn't look like much; interior decor is shabby but not unpleasant. We came for lunch and chose the buffet. At first I was disheartened to see only a few choices at the buffet and began to regret our restaurant choice. It only took a few bites to change my mind -- everything that was offered was absolutely delicious, with complex flavors and a great deal of subtlety. The prices are good. Wish I had more opportunities to come here. Highly recommended.

Worst Indian food ever. I wanted to like it...we were very excited to go there...it looked like Indian food, but didn't taste like it. The food was bland, and lacking in spice and flavor. The na'an and roti was stale and served cold. We ordered a lamb dish, the vegetable curry, and two orders Shahi Paneer. Often the sauces mixed with rice can make up for less than stellar vegetables/meat, but in this case the sauce was watery and salty. Taking the easy/cheap way out, Bombay Gaylord chose to season with salt instead of rich and flavorful spices that one would experience in a higher quality Indian establishment. The service was slow and menu items were lacking. The two ladies in our party of 4 ordered a glass of the house red and were told that they did not have any left. When we implored further, the waiter said that he had one glass left. To my friend who ordered lamb, which pairs well with red wine, he said "OK, you may have a glass and you (gesturing to my fiance) may not." My fiance instead ordered the Zinfandel. Both the house red and the Zin were surgery and reeked of boxed wine. Total bill for 4 entrees and 4 alcoholic beverages: $33.72 Bottom line: save your money and go elsewhere.

We came for a late lunch. The buffet was still out and it looked pretty good, but I wanted to order my standard items, so we ordered off the menu. Chicken Tikka Masala had a good sauce, although rather on the sweet side. The meat was not as tender as it could be, but it was quite acceptable. It gets a Thumbs Up. Saag Paneer is one my favorite dishes and for some reason (regional cuisine?) not on the menu at most places in the metro area. Here, it was delicious, with hearty chunks of the homemade cheese (paneer) and mild spinach puree. The bread selection was good. Garlic naan was more like "Indian/Italian Garlic Bread" than what I am used to traditionally, but if you like lots of visible garlic, you'll like it. I'm one of those people who think Garlic is a primary food group (along with the Salt, Fried, Chocolate, and other principal groups). We also had a poori. It wasn't as inflated as I like to see them, but it was delicious.

My sister and I drove by this place and decided to venture instead despite it looking like a total hole in the wall. It was 7PM on a Saturday evening, and at first we were the only customers. However people eventually dribbled in. We got the Saag Paneer & Chicken Tiki, both of which were delicious. The chicken was juicy & tender, not overcooked & tough like I've gotten at some places. Both the sauces were well-done, creamy, but not oily & greasy. Apparently rice comes with the dishes too. Also the naan was great - not over-baked or tough. Some of the other reviews aren't so hot, but perhaps it depends on what you order because both my sister & i enjoyed the flavorings of the 2 dishes we got. YUM! We'll go back

I love this as my neighborhood Indian restaurant. The food is tasty (and has the best rice of any Indian restaurant I've ever been to), and the service is good. The saag paneer is creamy & yummy; the tikka masala is amazing (I agreee with laura w. about the crack...). They tend to get annoyed if you go during the lunch buffet and order off the menu, but other than that, it's yummy!

Bombay Gaylord, or Bombay as I call it, is my favorite Indian restaurant in DC, if not my favorite indian place anywhere. The chicken tikka masala must have crack in it or something. It is way addictive. Leftovers the next day are incredible. My coworkers and I go here relatively often and whenever anyone brings in Bombay the next day for lunch, the scent of the leftovers always wafts down the hall and makes the rest of us hungry and jealous. The food is served in individual dishes with a common plate for basmati rice. Order some naan as well. I like some of the appetizers, too, although it's mostly fried foods like samosas. They give you a nice little side sauce and carrots with the samosas which I always find yummy. The mulligatawny soup isn't bad either. If you go on a weekday night (like monday), and ask for potatoes on the side with a tandoori platter, they may include very delicious curry potatoes for free on the side. I went here for my birthday (I like it that much) and they gave me mango ice cream (no singing though). The buffet on weekends is also good, and comes with salad, vegetables, rice, naan, and meat dishes, but I generally prefer a la carte so I can get my chicken tikka masala. The waiters are really nice and attentive with filling up water glasses. The only thing I've noticed that I could say is a drawback is that sometimes they forget about your drink order (like if you order a tea or a mango lassi). For me this is not a big deal though. Best hole in the wall place you'll ever go for indian!

  • Kate M.

I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with Sirius S. that Bombay Gaylord serves Indian food for Anglos. I'm glad I didn't bother getting a lassi here, because I wouldn't have needed it (the yogurt cools your mouth off when you're eating spicy food). I liked that they had a dinner buffet, which many Indian restaurants don't do, and the service was fine, but the food was blah. It wasn't exactly bad, hence the 2 stars instead of 1, but it's clear that Bombay Gaylord is not trying to impress you. The lamb curry was yuck. The "spinach and peas" (channa saag) was ok. The tandoori chicken was good. The rice was good. The salad was wilted iceberg lettuce. The naan had too much butter (ghee) on it. I did not leave particularly happy or satisfied. I usually don't like to judge restaurants by how they look on the outside, but I should have gone with my gut on this one. Bombay Gaylord's ugly exterior really reflects the crappy food you get inside. Stay away!

  • Serkalem M.

I love Indian & this is definitely one of my fav. restaurants. Customer service can be quite impersonal (hence the minus-1-star), which is compensated by efficiency. I'd rather have great food and efficient service over flattery any day so this is my Indian go-to place in the neighborhood.

  • Arthur H.

Wish we could give it more stars, but this established restaurant may have seen better days. At least that was our experience last week, when we stopped in for dinner on the way to a show. We had the Goan fish curry (made with salmon), bindhi (okra), and an assortment of vegetable pakoras, along with a chapati. Nothing was bad (although the fish tasted like it had been hanging around a while, probably in the deep freeze), but nothing was very tasty, either. The one word that almost never describes an Indian restaurant is "bland", but that is the word I'd use here to describe the taste of all three dishes. Bland not only in the way of spices, but generally. Perhaps we hit it on a bad night, or perhaps we ordered wrong, but we probably aren't going to try here again.

YOU WILL GET SICK IF YOU EAT HERE. I went here on a date and he had never been to Bombay Gaylord before so I dont blame him but I do blame myself for not getting up and leaving like I should have, i just didnt want to be rude to my date. Here is what happened: the host was a middle aged man with a pregnancy belly and he sat us and was bringing our silver ware and food which was fine. Then he was sitting behind the hostess both and wait for it... PICKING HIS NOSE. Yes he was all up in there with his index finger and i looked at him while he was doing it and he saw me and didnt stop. When my date asked me what I was looking at I said that the host was doing something inappropriate. When my date turned around the guy was onto rolling the booger he had dug up between his thumb and index finger then flung it toward the kitchen door. I wanted to puke! Writing this makes me want to puke! I barley touched my food when he brought it to us becuase all i kept thinking was, "uhhh boogers are everywhere!" Service is everything and those who are hired to do the service can make or break an establishment no matter how good the food is. My suggestion would be for management to reconsider having this man on their staff because I will never EVER go back to Bombay Gaylord.

I'm always trying to find great authentic Indian restaurants and Bombay Gaylord is pretty close. I stumbled upon this restaurant one day walking to the bank on my lunch break. If you're not looking you'd probably walk right past it. I always get the lunch buffet and am never disappointed with the selection. Choose from 4-5 fresh vegetarian and chicken dishes with salad, rice and naan to top off the buffet. The price is reasonable at $5.99 per pound to take-out and $8.99 to eat in.

I was really excited about getting to try Indian food around the DC area and didn't have time to run down to DC so i decided I would settle here since it was close to the hotel. As I entered i was amazed by the restaurant's ambience it was very attractive and upscale. We went for lunch so we headed over to the buffet and saw the usuals , Chicken Tikka Masala,Aloo Mutter, Veg Curry, Tandoori Chicken, Naan, Daal,Rice. I dumped a little of each of those things i just mentioned on my plate and went to sit down. First bite in Chicken Tikka Masala was not what I was expecting.... There was not that hurricane of flavors it just tasted pretty plain and bland. Aloo Mutter was good however the sauce was a bit oilier than I would like. Veg Curry was great. Daal was good too, the Tandoori Chicken looked different than the vibrant red colored ones i'm used to, it was good though. Naan was excellent very fluffy and not too oily. I took another bite of Chicken Tikka Masala and i felt little tiny bones in the bite size pieces of chicken i immediately began spitting it out feeling extremely unpleased.... i then went to the salad which was great , that and the naan were probably the best things at the restaurant..5 star service, they were nice and friendly, five star ambience very nice upscale restaurant but 3 star food I never thought i would give such a low rating to an indian restaurant considering the fact that i absolutely love that cuisine but this place just did not meet my standards foodwise.. I'll try something else next time i'm in the area

We've been ordering take out there for years and love it. We spent 15 years in New York City, and so we know good Indian food. If it's not on the menu, just ask them, they may cook it up for you.

I hate to do this, because the people at Bombay Gaylord have always been nice to me, but I feel like I can't NOT recount this fact: I ordered takeout from BG one night (pretty late, though that shouldn't matter)... And I got sick as a DOG. I thought I was going to DIE. I cannot state for certain that it was the food itself which made me sick. It tasted great when I ate it; the revenge didn't kick in till the morning after. So I don't know if my malai kofta went bad or what, but honestly, despite having had good food there in the past, I'll not be going back.

Well, the food was good. Granted, it's been awhile since I've had Indian so what do I know? I think for the price I received a good meal and good portions. I would have preferred a bit more spice in the curry. Down side, and this is a message to my waiter and to all waiters of the world...IF you smoke (and you shouldn't because it's stupid and gross) then at least wash your hands before you serve food. I didn't appreciate smelling your ashtray stinking hands as you reached across me to serve my meal.

This hidden jem has much to be appreciated and its ramshackle exterior belies the excellent food within. We've been there for lunch once and dinner a half dozen times and think it is one of the better Indian restaurants in the Silver Spring/ Rockville area. The interior is pleasant, service outstanding, the food quite delicious & reasonably priced. I think the spicing is spot on & compliments the food well. The space is sufficently quiet that good conversation may be held there and there is not the loud bollywood music (which I do enjoy) often found in other establishments. Give it a try, I don't think you'd be disappointed. 4 stars definitely!

Oh Bombay Gaylord, my Silver Spring Indian staple. Their proximity to where I live and ability to satiate my need for chicken tikka masala tempts me towards 4 or 5 start gratitude, but if I'm being objective, 3 or 3.5 sounds about right. I rarely order anything but the tikka dish. I've had other dishes at their lunch buffet that were fine, but nothing really compares to that perfect blend of peppery spices and smooth, subtly-sweet sauce. I can say that friends I've gone with have been at least decently pleased with their Rogan Joshes, Butter Chickens, and Chana Masalas. The downers: disappointing naan and kulcha. Might not seem like a big deal, especially since I use the breads primarily as a vehicle for getting that delicious tikka sauce to my mouth. But I've had excellent garlic naan and onion kulcha - hot, fluffy, incorporating the onion or garlic seamlessly - and Bombay Gaylord does not compete. Other possible downers: a friend with a higher spice tolerance says Bombay G is not a good fit for him. The service can be unfriendly - waiters always seem to be scowling and don't chat (doesn't bug me, but it might bother some). The lunch buffet selection is limited. The space is pretty large - good for bigger groups - and meh in decoration / ambiance. Price is average. Generally quiet and a good place for catching up with whoever you bring.

I'm surprised by Patrick H.'s review - I've been here many, many times and never had any gastrointestinal issues after! Probably my favorite Indian place in Silver Spring. Excellent biryani and chicken tikka. Great lunch deal, and like Michelle M. said, it's really never busy. Don't take that as an indication of quality though, it's really very tasty, and the waitstaff is so nice. Docking a few stars because it's a bit pricey for such a hole in the wall, but if you're in downtown SS and craving Indian, this is your place.

Bombay Gaylord is by FAR the best Indian food I have ever eaten. I grew up in LA and thought that the Indian restaurant my family used to go to was the best I'd ever eaten. Then I moved to Silver Spring and tried Bombay Gaylord and it blew it out of the water. Best Indian food, maybe the best food period, that I've ever eaten. The Chicken Tikka Masala and the Saag Gosht are our favorite dishes. The Sunday buffet is also delicious and a good deal. The only downside is that they do close a tad bit early in comparison to some of the other restaurants in downtown Silver Spring so just keep that in mind. Other than that, it rules!

This place is really great, either for eat-in or take-out. It is never busy inside - quite spacious, lots of tables, minimal decor. I believe they do most of their business in take-out. The service is good, and the food is pretty darn yummy. The saag gosht and chicken kadai are great. Tons of vegetarian options as well - the palak aloo methi is amazing!! It's right on Georgia Ave, just outside the downtown area. I highly recommend it if you're in the Silver Spring area.

For dinner and takeout it is great. The chicken tika masala is an old standby. Other food I have had is also generally quite good. The staff are friendly and attentive. I don't love the lunch buffet because it kind of bothers me to see it all sitting there uncovered, but I have eaten it and not gotten sick. Plus, the food is really quite inexpensive for both lunch and dinner.
